We viewed some short documentaries that were created in response to the xenophobic violence that occurred in South Africa about three months ago. We were amazed how quickly local feelings of shock and fearful disappointment have shifted to problem-solving and open expression.
Questions around immigration policies and motives for xenophobia dominated the discussion that followed. All agreed that mindful planning in the coming months were crucial for the stability of the country.
We had a really good weekend, but it was definitely winter weather here in Cape Town. It has been absolutely pouring rain, for days and days. The rain comes down in sheets, and paired with the tumultuous ocean waves across the street from our hotel, it’s quite dramatic. It’s been a tough situation for some, there are places are completely flooded, and it’s difficult to get around.
We went to the South African International Documentary Film Festival over the weekend, and got to take a film class for free, which was really fun. We visited the Victoria and Albert Waterfront, a very popular tourist spot, and walked around a giant mall with everything you could possibly think a mall should have. We also watched great sports, a couple of good rugby matches and of course the finals of Wimbledon.
We are still at the Ritz Hotel, and will be until at least the 13th. We are working with a realtor, and hope to have a place soon. Also working on the car front, and we may have something. We will let you know when we do. We do have a cell phone, but go to Internet cafes for our computer fix.
